Pat McAfee brought politics into his ESPN show once again, this time poking fun at Dr. Anthony Fauci for repeatedly invoking his Fifth Amendment rights during a contentious Senate hearing. The former director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases appeared before lawmakers under a congressional subpoena on Wednesday.
During the hearing, which examined the origins of COVID-19 and whether Fauci misled Congress or the public, he reportedly invoked the Fifth Amendment 111 times. One day later, McAfee turned the testimony into a running joke with some help from Philadelphia Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio.
McAfee addressed Fauci’s appearance during Thursday’s episode of “The Pat McAfee Show,” incorporating the subject into a parody interview with Fangio. The segment made it appear as though Fangio were answering questions from McAfee and the rest of the show’s personalities in real time. In reality, his responses were pulled from an earlier press conference at the Eagles’ training camp.
McAfee began the fake exchange by asking, “Vic, we appreciate you joining us. Do you think your team will win the Super Bowl this year?”
Fangio’s response came from the previous media appearance, where he had joked, “I’m gonna be like Fauci, and just take the 5th Amendment on all your questions.”
The show continued using variations of the same setup, with multiple personalities asking Fangio about the Eagles and receiving the repeated Fifth Amendment response. One question concerned the possibility of defensive tackle Jalen Carter receiving a massive contract extension. Fangio’s previously recorded remark was once again spliced into the segment as his answer.
Dr. Anthony Fauci Invoked His Constitutional Rights
Fauci became nationally recognizable while helping lead the federal government’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic under Presidents Donald Trump and Joe Biden. Although he has since retired from government service, Fauci was ordered to appear before the Senate committee as lawmakers continued investigating the pandemic’s origins and decisions made by public health officials.
The hearing was chaired by Republican Senator Rand Paul, who has repeatedly clashed with Fauci over COVID-19 policies, research funding and statements made to Congress. Fauci characterized Paul’s continued pursuit of him as an “unhinged obsession.”
Rather than answering questions that could potentially expose him to criminal liability, Fauci repeatedly exercised his Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination.
Invoking the Fifth Amendment is a constitutional protection and does not establish that a person committed a crime. However, Fauci’s decision immediately generated political debate and provided McAfee with material for his sports-focused program.

Fauci has not been accused of a crime based solely on his decision to invoke the Fifth Amendment. Still, his refusal to answer lawmakers’ questions has intensified scrutiny from critics who believe he has not been sufficiently transparent about decisions made during the pandemic.

McAfee did not attempt to dissect those legal or political arguments in depth. Instead, he used Fangio’s joke to turn the tense congressional testimony into a recurring sports-comedy bit.

The former Indianapolis Colts punter previously defended his decision to interview President Trump on Veterans Day, despite criticism surrounding the appearance. He has also challenged liberal hockey fans and members of the media over their response to his offer to cover the bar tab for the United States men’s hockey team in Miami following its gold-medal victory.
McAfee additionally pushed back against arguments that Caitlin Clark’s popularity is primarily connected to her being white. That debate has involved other ESPN personalities, including Monica McNutt, and became part of a broader conversation about race, media attention and the growth of women’s basketball.
