Osun Poll: Akpabio, APC Governors Storm Osogbo to Back Oyebamiji

Senate President Godswill Akpabio and several governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) have arrived in Osogbo for the party’s final mega rally ahead of Saturday’s Osun State governorship election.

The rally is part of the APC’s closing campaign activities for its governorship candidate, Asiwaju Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji, as political parties conclude their mobilisation ahead of the August 15, 2026 poll.

Among the APC figures in Osogbo are Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma, who chairs the Progressive Governors Forum, Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo, Kogi State Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo and Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa.

Also present is James Faleke, a member of the House of Representatives representing Ikeja Federal Constituency.

The event is taking place on the final day of the official campaign period and is expected to draw APC supporters, campaign officials and party members from the 30 local government areas of Osun State.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had set Thursday, August 13, as the deadline for campaigns after adjusting the election date from August 8 to August 15.

The APC is backing Oyebamiji, who emerged as the party’s candidate after its governorship primary in Osogbo.

Oyebamiji is facing incumbent Governor Ademola Adeleke of the Accord Party, alongside candidates fielded by other political parties, including the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and the People’s Redemption Party (PRP).

The election comes amid heightened political tension in Osun State, which has recorded reports of violence in the weeks leading up to the poll.

The Accord Party has accused the APC of using federal influence against opposition parties, an allegation that has added to concerns surrounding the conduct of the election.

Another major development before the poll was the freezing of the Osun State Government’s account by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) last week.

The account was subsequently unfrozen after President Bola Tinubu intervened and directed the anti-graft agency to reverse the action.

With campaigning now coming to an end, attention will shift to the final preparations for Saturday’s election, when voters across the state will decide who governs Osun for the next term.
