Chelsea have completed the signing of experienced striker Danny Welbeck from Brighton, with the former England international putting pen to paper on a two-year contract at Stamford Bridge.
The 35-year-old arrives after enjoying the most prolific Premier League campaign of his career, scoring 13 league goals in 37 appearances for Brighton last season.
Although neither club disclosed the transfer fee, Welbeck becomes Chelsea’s third signing of the summer following the arrivals of Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa and Marco Palestra from Atalanta.
Welbeck excited by Stamford Bridge move
Welbeck expressed his delight after sealing the move, revealing that discussions with head coach Xabi Alonso convinced him to join the Blues.
“When you hear of the interest from Chelsea, it’s something that fills you with such immense pride.
“I know a few of the boys already and I’ve had fantastic conversations with the manager and already feel that connection.
“I’ve got that fire in my belly and I’m ready to give it everything for this club to make everyone at Chelsea, and the supporters, proud.”
The signing marks a notable shift in Chelsea’s transfer strategy under the Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital ownership, with the club moving to add proven experience after prioritising younger talents since taking over in 2022.
Competition increases in Chelsea attack
Welbeck’s arrival adds more competition to Chelsea’s attacking options ahead of the new season.
Joao Pedro is expected to remain the club’s first-choice striker, while Liam Delap, Emmanuel Emegha, Marc Guiu and Nicolas Jackson are also part of the squad, although some could leave before the transfer window closes.
The veteran forward began his professional career at Manchester United before joining Arsenal in a £16 million move in 2014. He spent five seasons with the Gunners before moving to Watford and later Brighton in 2020.
During his time at Brighton, Welbeck established himself as the club’s leading Premier League goalscorer and produced one of the best seasons of his career last term.
Internationally, Welbeck earned 42 caps for England and scored 16 goals. His most recent appearance for the national team came in 2018.
