A former National Trustee of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Zone A, Comrade Abbas Ibrahim, has resigned his position to contest as the Deputy Governorship Candidate of the Labour Party in Kano State.
In a letter addressed to NUJ members on Comrade Abbas said his decision followed his emergence as the Labour Party’s repositioned deputy governorship candidate for the 2027 elections.
“With a deep sense of humility, gratitude and comradeship, I wish to inform you that, having emerged as the repositioned Labour Party Deputy Governorship Candidate for Kano State, I have decided to resign my position as NUJ National Trustee, Zone A, to enable me devote adequate time and energy to this new responsibility and actively participate in the political process,” he stated.
According to him, the move followed “sincere self reflection” and a resolve to contribute more directly to governance.
“I believe that journalism, trade unionism and politics, though different platforms, are all avenues through which we can serve humanity, defend justice, promote the interests of the people and contribute to the development of our society,” he said.
Comrade Abbas paid tribute to the NUJ leadership for the opportunity to serve, singling out the NUJ National President, Comrade Alhassan Yahya, and Kano State Council Chairman, Comrade Suleiman Dederi, for their support.
“My years in the NUJ have been a remarkable journey of service, struggle, friendship and solidarity. I remain eternally grateful to the comrades who stood with me through the years,” he added.
He however stressed that while he is leaving an elective position in the union, “I am not leaving the brotherhood of comrades.”
“As I take this new step, I humbly seek your prayers, goodwill and support. I remain your comrade, colleague and brother,” he said.
The Labour Party in Kano is expected to unveil its full governorship ticket in the coming weeks ahead of the 2027 general elections.
