Nigeria and Thailand have agreed to deepen bilateral cooperation across technology, agriculture, commerce, renewable energy and other strategic sectors, in a move signalling a significant recalibration of relations between the two nations.
The agreement was reached on Wednesday during a high-level meeting between Vice President Kashim Shettima and a Thai government delegation at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

Beyond Oil and Rice
Vice President Shettima emphasised the need to elevate ties beyond the traditional focus on crude oil and rice production, calling for a strategic review of the bilateral relationship.
“Nigeria is a large market. There are enormous opportunities for partnership and investment in agriculture, ICT, renewable energy and solid minerals,” he said, adding that the nation’s youthful population and workforce presented a compelling case for foreign investment.
The Vice President urged Thailand to continue doing business with Nigeria, citing the country’s strategic position on the African continent, demographic advantages and abundant natural resources.

Thailand’s Africa Push
Thailand’s Deputy Prime Minister, Yousef Khalawi, who was making his first official visit to Africa, commended the ongoing transformation under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
Describing Nigeria as a strategic partner of Thailand, a formidable voice in the Global South and an emerging leader in e-commerce, Mr Khalawi outlined a new initiative—the Thailand-Africa Initiative—aimed at boosting economic ties, business and people-to-people relations.
“An important dimension of this initiative is promoting economic cooperation, especially in agriculture, while also exploring Thailand’s strengths in universal health coverage and tourism,” the Deputy Prime Minister noted.
“For us in Thailand, we believe that Nigeria is a strategic partner bilaterally and an important window to strengthening ties with Africa, particularly West Africa.”

Mutual Benefits
The enhanced partnership is expected to unlock new opportunities in technology transfer, agricultural innovation and renewable energy development, with both nations poised to leverage their respective strengths for mutual economic gain.
The development underscores Nigeria’s growing appeal as an investment destination and Thailand’s strategic pivot towards deepening engagement with the African continent.
