The Nigeria Customs Service has announced a shift toward annual recruitment cycles, replacing the irregular employment patterns that have historically created prolonged gaps between hiring exercises.
The Comptroller-General disclosed the development on Tuesday during a briefing at the service’s Abuja headquarters while presenting the final roster of successful candidates from the 2024/2025 recruitment round.
Recruitment will now function as a standing, predictable yearly process rather than an occasional undertaking spanning multiple years.
The 2026 exercise is scheduled to commence later in 2026, with the Comptroller-General pledging that the entire cycle from advertisement through final candidate lists will be concluded within the same calendar year.
The service made this decision to strengthen manpower planning and enable timely replacement of retiring personnel.
The agency has now established the screening, verification, and recruitment infrastructure necessary to streamline future exercises.
Much of the delay in the 2024/2025 cycle stemmed from constructing this framework, which will no longer require rebuilding for subsequent recruitment rounds.
The Comptroller-General noted that the new system will also benefit prospective candidates by providing clarity about recruitment timelines, eliminating the uncertainty of waiting years for the next opportunity.
The recently concluded recruitment exercise resulted in 3,852 successful applicants receiving appointment offers.
The distribution across cadres included 1,275 recruits in the Superintendent Cadre, 367 in the Inspectorate Cadre, and 2,210 in the Customs Assistant Cadre.
The annual recruitment framework is intended to create a more systematic and predictable hiring process for both the service and thousands of Nigerians seeking employment with the agency.
