THE National Hydroelectric Power Producing Areas Development Commission (N-HYPPADEC) has reaffirmed its commitment to sustainable development in hydroelectric host communities across Kaduna State.
Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of N-HYPPADEC, Alhaji Abubakar Sadiq Yelwa, stated this during a stakeholders’ interactive session in Kaduna on Monday.
Yelwa said the meeting aimed to strengthen collaboration with stakeholders to address ecological, environmental and socio economic challenges in host communities.
He said N-HYPPADEC operated in 10 member states, covering over 100 local government areas and more than 2,000 communities hosting hydroelectric infrastructure.
According to him, the commission’s mandate includes infrastructure development, environmental protection, flood management, agriculture, education, healthcare, youth empowerment and rural development.
Yelwa said the commission had executed water supply projects, flood control works, rural electrification, agricultural support, healthcare facilities and educational interventions across pioneer states.
He said Kaduna became a beneficiary following the commission’s expanded mandate under the new Electricity Act.
The managing director said N-HYPPADEC had distributed 1,250 life jackets to riverine communities and provided a flying boat for emergency response in Kaduna.
He added that the commission established a nursery with 1,000 tree seedlings and constructed solar powered boreholes and solar streetlights in affected communities.
Yelwa said other interventions included power tillers for farmers, classroom blocks, payment of UTME and O’Level examination fees and drainage desilting projects.
He assured stakeholders of transparency, accountability and effective implementation of projects in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu.
Earlier, Kaduna State Coordinator of N-HYPPADEC, Abdulhalim Abidu Yazi, described the meeting as a platform for dialogue and joint problem solving.
Yazi said the commission remained committed to people centred interventions driven by community needs and stakeholder participation.
He urged participants to provide inputs on flood control, erosion, healthcare, education, youth empowerment and other priority areas.
Chairman of Kachia Local Government, Manzo Maigari, commended N-HYPPADEC for ongoing interventions in host communities.
Maigari, however, appealed for electricity and potable water in Kachia and kaura communities hosting the Gurara Dam.
He said residents deserved to benefit directly from facilities contributing to national electricity generation and water supply.
The chairman also expressed concern over worsening insecurity, displacement and disruption of farming activities in the affected communities.
He appealed for interventions that would restore livelihoods, improve resilience and strengthen security in the area.
District Head of Gabasawa, Shitu Dikko, who spoke on behalf of the Zazzau Emirate, acknowledged N-HYPPADEC’s support with sanitation and security equipment.
Dikko requested additional waste management facilities to improve refuse disposal and reduce flooding caused by blocked drainage channels.
He also appealed for interventions along major rivers in Zaria and Igabi to mitigate environmental challenges affecting surrounding communities.
A representative of the Lere Emirate, Bashir wambai urged N-HYPPADEC to urgently rehabilitate the deteriorating Lere Bridge to prevent possible collapse.
The representative also sought support for erosion control, potable water supply, solar streetlights and intensified public sensitisation on waste management.
He commended the commission for previous interventions that improved security through installation of solar-powered streetlights in parts of the emirate.
The stakeholders pledged continued collaboration with N-HYPPADEC to enhance sustainable development and improve living conditions in Kaduna’s hydroelectric host communities. (NAN)
