Manchester United’s 1-1 draw with Paris Saint-Germain in Gothenburg may have been a useful pre-season workout, but Michael Carrick has been left with more questions than answers ahead of the new campaign.
The biggest concern came after just 20 minutes when Mason Mount was withdrawn after appearing to pick up another injury.
The midfielder had shown encouraging signs in central midfield during pre-season, but his latest setback underlines United’s lack of reliable options in the area.
Mount setback exposes midfield problems
Mount initially appeared to be moving freely before speaking with members of United’s medical staff and eventually heading down the tunnel. It remains unclear whether the decision was precautionary, but his injury record means the situation will inevitably raise concerns.
The 27-year-old has managed only 72 appearances across three seasons at Old Trafford, averaging just 24 games per campaign. United therefore cannot afford to build their midfield plans around his availability.
Youri Tielemans made his first appearance for the club and offered some composure, including a clever pass that created an opportunity for Bruno Fernandes. Kobbie Mainoo is also expected to return for the squad’s training camp in Dublin.
However, United still lack a natural defensive midfielder. The current situation leaves Andrey Santos carrying considerable responsibility despite his limited experience at this level.
The club have been cautious in the transfer market, but the draw with PSG highlighted why another midfield addition may now be essential.
Defensive concerns add to Carrick’s headache
United’s problems were not limited to midfield. PSG exposed weaknesses in defence almost immediately, taking the lead in the second minute after Khvicha Kvaratskhelia created space down the right.
Dro Fernandez then combined with Ibrahim Mbaye, who finished the move to put the French champions ahead.
Harry Maguire and Ayden Heaven struggled to deal with the attack, with Carrick replacing Heaven with Leny Yoro at half-time. Noussair Mazraoui was also withdrawn for Diogo Dalot as United reshuffled their back line.
Heaven’s night included a misplaced pass, a foul on Kvaratskhelia and a booking, although mistakes are understandable for a 19-year-old defender still developing at senior level.
United were eventually rewarded at the other end, with Bryan Mbeumo continuing his impressive run under Carrick.
The forward’s equaliser took his tally to eight goals under the manager, including pre-season matches, with every one coming while operating as a striker.
