Nigerian winger Chidera Ejuke scored his first Sevilla goal in over eight months during a 3-1 win against Athletic Club, but angry fans heavily criticized him for still speaking English after years in Spain.
Super Eagles winger Chidera Ejuke went from a pre-season outcast to an opening-week hero, ending an agonising 251-day goal drought to secure a brilliant 3-1 victory for Sevilla against Athletic Club at San Mamés.

But instead of celebrating his clutch performance, a vocal contingent of furious Sevilla supporters immediately turned on the Nigerian dribbler for a completely unexpected reason: his refusal to speak Spanish.
From the Transfer List to the Scoresheet
Before his dramatic intervention on Saturday, Ejuke had not found the back of the net since December 14, 2025, during a 4-0 home victory against Real Oviedo.
The Nigerian forward’s extreme drought for Sevilla lasted exactly 8 months and 8 days.

In fact, Ejuke was considered completely surplus to requirements this summer. He was embarrassingly left out of Sevilla’s pre-season training camp in the Netherlands as the club actively tried to sell him.
Yet, under the guidance of manager Luis Garcia Plaza, the 28-year-old put his head down and waited for his moment.
Coming off the bench, Ejuke scored Sevilla’s crucial second goal, ensuring the club maintained its perfect start to the LaLiga campaign.
“I always try to be available to help the team in any way I can,” Ejuke stated in his post-match reaction, as reported by Pulse Sports. “In the two games we’ve played here, I’ve been able to help the team, and I’m very happy about that.”
“He Won’t Learn Spanish in 600 Years!”
While Ejuke was expressing his delight in English, Sevilla fans completely flooded the comment sections to vent their deep frustrations over his lack of cultural integration.

Despite his undeniable talent on the pitch, supporters are tired of reading translations for a player who has spent years in the country.
“This one won’t learn Spanish in 600 years,” one annoyed supporter commented.
Another fan added: “He’s been here for almost 3 years and still can’t even get a handle on the language, lol. Hey Chidera, you’ve been here for over two years now, say something in Spanish, my friend!”
The On-Field Vindicated Hero
Despite the linguistic backlash, many fans are begging the club to appreciate what they have before it is too late, heavily praising his clutch gene.
“I already said that I don’t have any extra Ejuke,” a supporter argued. “A guy who always steps up and rises to the occasion can’t be surplus to you.”
Another fan noted the high potential under his new boss: “Ejuke the baller. Let’s see if LGP educates him football-wise and we make something big out of him.”
Ejuke has proven he has the skills to survive the LaLiga chopping block, but if he wants to completely win over the Andalusian faithful, his next goal celebration might need to be accompanied by a bit of local vocabulary.
