The Lagos State Government has pledged its support for the winner of the 2026 Miss Surulere Heritage Pageant, including opportunities for international partnerships with Chinese and other stakeholders.
The pageant, organised by the Surulere Local Government Development Council (LCDA), will hold its grand finale on Friday, August 14, as part of efforts to promote youth empowerment, cultural heritage and emerging talents in the community.
The government, however, said its support would not be limited to the eventual winner, adding that contestants who demonstrate commitment, readiness and potential would also be considered for collaboration and other opportunities after the competition.
Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday at the Alausa Secretariat, Ikeja, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Tourism, Idris Aregbe, assured the contestants of the government’s support and disclosed that the winner would have opportunities to engage with Chinese partners and other international stakeholders.
“We pledge our full support to the contestants. There will be a partnership with our Chinese partners and other partners for the eventual winner.
“However, our commitment does not end there. We will also work with those who show readiness and potential, even if they do not emerge as the winner,” he said.
Aregbe urged the contestants to approach the competition with a strong sense of purpose and responsibility, saying the eventual queen should be capable of inspiring others and positively representing the community.
“Give us a queen who will inspire us to do more. You are the face of Surulere,” he said.
He also highlighted the global presence of people from Surulere, urging the contestants to recognise the responsibility that comes with representing the community and to use the platform to project its heritage, talents and achievements.
Aregbe said the government’s support was aimed at making the pageant more than a conventional beauty contest by connecting participants with opportunities that could contribute to their personal development while promoting tourism and culture.
Also speaking, the Special Adviser on Tourism in Surulere, Fuad Odofin, said the pageant was conceived to inspire young people and women to develop confidence, independence and a strong sense of purpose.
Odofin said the initiative would provide a platform for young people to discover their potential, connect with one another and contribute to the preservation and promotion of Surulere’s heritage.
He said the organisers were particularly interested in encouraging participants to become purposeful in their personal and professional lives and use their talents to make positive contributions to society.
According to him, the pageant is also intended to reconnect younger residents with the cultural identity of Surulere and strengthen the sense of community among its people.
Odofin noted that Surulere already has a strong identity in entertainment, sports and fashion, describing the three sectors as important parts of the community’s history and cultural heritage.
He said the pageant was designed to help revive and further develop these areas by creating opportunities for young people to showcase their talents and contribute to the growth of the local creative economy.
He explained that the decision to organise the maiden edition of the Surulere Heritage Beauty Pageant was driven by the need to harness the potential of young people in the community and provide a platform for them to express themselves while promoting Surulere’s heritage.
“The outcome of this event is based on us bringing our youth together in order to build a heritage in Surulere.
“Surulere has a structure already. It’s full of entertainment, sports and also fashion. So we have that entertainment alive in us and we need to bring it back to play. So that is why we are having the first edition of Surulere Heritage Beauty Pageant in Surulere Local Government,” Odofin said.
Beyond the competition for the crown, the organisers said the initiative seeks to promote youth empowerment, women’s confidence, cultural heritage, entertainment, sports and fashion, while encouraging participants to embrace purpose, leadership and community development.
