The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has received knocks for concealing the death of a corps member in a Kano State camp, the act, causing raised eyebrows from the general public who have expressed concerns over the proper welfare of the members.
The deceased, simply identified simply as John, was said to have died while participating in the orientation camp, a mishap which has caused grief scenes and calls for the corps body to unravel the circumstances which led to the demise of the member.
A respondent at the Batch B stream 02 camp in Kusala Dam, Karaye Local Government Area of the state, where the incident happened, disclosed that since the demise of the member on Thursday, the NYSC body of the state is yet to unveil the mishap to the public.
On a preference of anonymity, she uttered that the incident, which occurred when the participants were expecting to receive their accommodation, medical welfare provisions for the three-week programme, has also caused concern in the camp over the welfare of the participants who put in a far length of efforts in obeying the call of serving their fatherland.
She also added that it remains unclear if the deceased was taken to a medical facility or somewhere else for resuscitation before he died
The Guild made efforts to seek the body’s reaction but was met with a prickly response. During a call to placed to the NYSC Secretariat on Saturday, an official declined from speaking on the matter, and rather said, ”So what do you want to confirm? Don’t ever call me again, it is our headquarters you should call,” before ending the call.
The medium also tried to reach the headquarters and the Press and Public Relations channels for more clarification, however, calls put through did not connect.
As at time of publication, the body is yet to make a declaration of the matter.
