Four Qur’anic students from Kadage Sharifai in Ungogo Local Government Area of Kano State have died after reportedly falling ill from food suspected to have been contaminated.
The affected children, who were receiving Qur’anic education, were rushed to the Malam Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital after developing complications suspected to be linked to the food they had consumed.
According to a statement issued on Monday by the National Chairman of the Tsangaya Media Network, Sani Nuhu, the students were from a Qur’anic school operated by Malam Iliyasu Mai Tsangaya.
Nuhu said the affected children were taken to the hospital for urgent medical attention following the suspected food poisoning.
However, their condition reportedly deteriorated, and all four students died at the medical facility on Sunday night, August 16.
“Despite receiving medical attention, the affected students unfortunately lost their lives,” Nuhu said in the statement made available to journalists in Kano.
The statement did not disclose the type of food consumed by the children or identify the substance suspected to have caused the poisoning.
The exact circumstances surrounding the deaths therefore remain unclear, pending investigations by relevant authorities.
Following their deaths, the remains of the four children were buried after permission was obtained from the District Head, known locally as the Dagaci, and the area police officer.
As of press time, the police had yet to issue an official statement on the incident.
The police are expected to investigate the circumstances surrounding the deaths, including what the children consumed and whether the suspected contamination was responsible for their deaths.
