Normal flight operations have resumed at Terminal 2 of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, after the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria clarified that there was no fire at the facility despite an earlier fire scare.
The authority said investigations were ongoing to determine why the airport’s fire suppression system was activated, stressing that the incident did not result in any casualties.
Smoke traced to fire suppression system
Providing an update on Sunday, FAAN’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Henry Agbebire, said preliminary findings showed that the smoke noticed inside the terminal was caused by the discharge of the facility’s FM-200 fire suppression system.
He explained that investigators were working to establish what triggered the automatic activation of the safety equipment.
According to him, there was no actual fire at the terminal, contrary to initial reports that suggested a fire incident had occurred.
Operations return to normal
FAAN confirmed that normal operations had resumed at the terminal shortly after the incident, with passengers and airlines continuing their activities without further disruption.
The authority assured airport users that the situation had been brought under control while experts continued investigations into the cause of the system’s activation.
It also reiterated that the safety and security of passengers, workers and airport facilities remained its top priority.

In its statement, the authority thanked passengers, airlines, airport users and other stakeholders for their understanding and cooperation during the incident.
FAAN said it remained committed to maintaining the highest safety standards across Nigeria’s airports and would continue to monitor the situation until investigations were concluded.
The authority added that a detailed probe was underway to determine the exact circumstances that led to the discharge of the FM-200 fire suppression system and pledged to provide further updates when necessary.
