Amid rising political tension and concerns over violence in Osun State ahead of the governorship election, Nigerian music star, David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has called on the United States and the international community to pay close attention to developments in the state.
The singer expressed concern over the possibility of violence, intimidation and disruption of the democratic process, saying the people of Osun deserved to exercise their constitutional right to vote freely and without fear.
Davido, who is a nephew of Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, made the appeal in a statement addressed to U.S. President Donald Trump, urging relevant authorities to ensure that the election is conducted peacefully and transparently.
“President Donald Trump, I am calling your attention to the situation in Osun State, Nigeria, as we approach the election,” Davido wrote on his X handle on Tuesday.
“There are growing concerns about tension and the possibility of violence, intimidation, or disruption of the democratic process.”
He appealed to the United States and the international community to closely monitor the election and encourage relevant authorities to protect voters and ensure that every vote is respected.
Davido stressed the need for peace during the electoral process, saying the people of the state should not be subjected to violence or intimidation because of the election.
“We do not want bloodshed. We do not want intimidation. We want peace, transparency, and a free and fair election,” he said.
The appeal comes as political parties intensify their campaigns and preparations for the August 15 governorship election, with concerns over the security of voters and the conduct of the poll receiving increased attention.
Davido urged all relevant authorities and stakeholders to prioritise the safety of residents and protect the integrity of the electoral process.
