Popular social media activist Martins Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), has announced that he was discharged and acquitted in the police impersonation case filed against him by the Nigeria Police, bringing to an end a legal battle that lasted about two years.
According to the activist, the court struck out the case after finding insufficient evidence to sustain the charge, clearing him of allegations that he impersonated a police officer by wearing a Nigeria Police Force uniform.
VeryDarkMan disclosed the development in a post shared on his verified Facebook page on Tuesday, describing the judgment as a major victory and insisting that he had committed no offence.
He said the charge arose from allegations that he unlawfully wore a Nigeria Police uniform, an offence punishable by between two and five years’ imprisonment upon conviction.
According to him, the court found that the prosecution failed to establish its case and consequently discharged and acquitted him.
Reacting to the outcome, the activist expressed gratitude to his legal team for representing him throughout the proceedings, describing the verdict as the end of a prolonged legal battle.
“This case has finally come to an end. The court struck it out for lack of evidence and discharged and acquitted me. I have always maintained my innocence,” he wrote.
As of the time of filing this report, the Nigeria Police Force had not issued an official statement confirming or responding to the court’s reported decision.
