Rep. Max Miller (R-OH), who’s faced calls from members of his own party to step down amid abuse allegations, announced an unprecedented ploy Tuesday in a bid to prove his innocence.
Newly obtained court records have recently revealed a series of troubling allegations leveled against Miller, including that he beat his ex-wife, threw boiling water on her and broke his 2-year-old daughter’s collarbone, accusations he’s vehemently denied.
In a video broadcast Sunday, a defiant Miller vowed to continue his re-election campaign, and on Tuesday, revealed that he plans to initiate a congressional ethics investigation – on himself.
“In light of all the renewed interest in my family affairs I am going to file my own paperwork for an ethics investigation into myself to clear my name from these horrific attacks on myself and family. I have absolutely nothing to hide,” Miller said in a statement shared on social media.
“We will be providing the committee all necessary documents needed for a detail examination. The accusations continue to change, but my facts stay the same. I am looking forward to my colleagues reading everything for themselves.”
Miller’s lengthy video rebuttal to the allegations leveled against him faced fierce scrutiny, perhaps most notably an argument the Ohio Republican made to dismiss an accusation that he had “thrown” his ex-wife “against the wall.”
“If I had assaulted her, would she have offered to cook me dinner six days later?” Miller rhetorically asked in his video rebuttal.
Miller’s re-election prospects had taken a nosedive following the release of his video denial. According to Axios, President Donald Trump called the Ohio lawmaker privately Monday night to express his doubts that Miller could win in November.
Sen. Bernie Moreno (R-OH), the father of Miller’s ex-wife, explicitly called for Miller to resign on Sunday, a call that was supported by other Republican senators.
