Cameroon female national team striker, Gabrielle Onguene, has become the player with the highest appearances in the Women’s African Cup of Nations, WAFCON.
Onguene set the record after appearing in this year’s edition of the competition in the Indomitable Lionesses 2-1 win over Mali, making it her eighth time appearance in eight editions of the continental tournament having made her debut in 2008.
The 37-year-old’s record which also is applicable in the make category broke the previous record of 7 tournament appearances, which was held initially by legendary Nigerian defender, Onome Ebi, out of her national team career which has spanned through two decades.
She was named the Best Player of the Tournament when Cameroon hosted the WAFCON in 2016, and globally led the west African country to the Round of 16 in their debut FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2015, and also scoring in the 2019 World Cup against the Netherlands.
“It is an honour for me to be here, to play the game that I love, that has given me so much,” the record holder said.
“To represent Cameroon has been a dream come true over the years..It has been a long journey since 2008. When I remember coming on for a few minutes, I am left truly grateful for that single opportunity to showcase my talent and thereafter working hard to be consistent and be a regular on the national team.”
