Arsenal have renewed their interest in Aston Villa defender Ezri Konsa as the Premier League champions look to strengthen their defence before the new season.
The 28-year-old remains on holiday following his involvement with England at the World Cup and was unavailable for Villa’s Super Cup meeting with Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday.
Arsenal previously explored a deal for Konsa but were unwilling to meet Villa’s £60 million valuation, with their initial offer understood to have been around £30 million.
The Gunners are now prepared to revisit the possibility of signing the England international after completing their move for Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle United.
Arsenal face tough negotiations
Konsa’s versatility has made him an attractive target for Arsenal, who believe he could provide additional options across the defensive line.
The defender was a key player for Villa last season, making 48 appearances in all competitions as Unai Emery’s side won the Europa League.
However, Arsenal recognise that their previous valuation will not be enough to convince Villa to sell.
The London club are therefore expected to significantly increase their proposal, although it remains uncertain whether Villa would consider allowing Konsa to leave for anything below their £60 million asking price.
Konsa still has an important role in Villa’s plans, making negotiations particularly difficult for Arsenal.
Gunners also ask about Romero
Arsenal’s defensive search has also taken them to north London rivals Tottenham Hotspur.
The Premier League champions have reportedly held exploratory discussions with Spurs over a potential deal for captain Cristian Romero.
Tottenham, however, are understood to have no intention of selling the Argentina international to Arsenal because of the fierce rivalry between the two clubs.
