A 23-year-old suspected Boko Haram fighter, identified as Ali Saidiq, has surrendered to Nigerian troops in Borno State, handing over an AK-47 rifle and 26 rounds of ammunition.
The surrender comes as the Nigerian military intensifies counter-insurgency operations against Boko Haram and other terrorist groups operating around the Lake Chad region.
Saidiq, a native of Garere in Kukawa Local Government Area of Borno State, reportedly surrendered at about 4:45 p.m. on Thursday during a stop-and-search operation at the Kwatan Alkama checkpoint.
The operation was conducted by troops of the 196 Amphibious Battalion and the Nigerian Army Brigade Lake Chad as part of ongoing efforts to restrict the movement of terrorist fighters and disrupt their access to weapons and supplies.
According to security sources cited by security analyst Zagazola Makama, Saidiq voluntarily handed himself over to the troops along with an AK-47 rifle bearing registration number 02657.
He also surrendered one magazine containing 26 rounds of 7.62x39mm ammunition.
Preliminary investigations indicate that Saidiq decided to leave the terrorist group following sustained military pressure on Boko Haram elements operating in the area.
Security sources said the young man had reportedly become disillusioned with continued involvement in terrorist activities before deciding to surrender.
His decision comes amid increased military operations across Borno and the wider Lake Chad axis, where troops have been conducting offensive operations, patrols, raids and intelligence-led stop-and-search exercises.
Security officials believe the surrender could be an indication that continued military pressure is affecting both the operational capabilities and morale of terrorist fighters in the region.
Saidiq Undergoes Military Investigation
Following his surrender, Saidiq was taken into military custody for profiling and further investigation.
Authorities are expected to establish his alleged position and responsibilities within the terrorist organisation, determine how long he was involved with the group and identify possible links to other members and cells operating in the area.
Investigators are also expected to obtain intelligence from him concerning the movements, locations, supply routes and activities of terrorist fighters in the Lake Chad region.
Such information could potentially assist troops in planning further operations against insurgent networks.
The AK-47 rifle and the 26 rounds of ammunition surrendered by Saidiq have been secured by the military as part of the investigation.
The recovery is significant because restricting terrorist groups’ access to firearms and ammunition remains a key component of the military’s counter-insurgency strategy.
Troops have continued to combine direct combat operations with intelligence gathering, patrols, checkpoints and searches aimed at preventing terrorists from moving freely between communities and hideouts.
