No fewer than 195 students of the Federal University Gusau have dragged the institution before the Federal High Court over the alleged failure to refund registration fees paid through the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND).
The suit, filed at the Federal High Court in Gusau by Tijjani Magaji on behalf of the affected students, lists the Federal University Gusau, the Vice-Chancellor, the Bursar and the Director of Finance as respondents.
The students are seeking an order compelling the university to refund the fees, according to court documents posted by the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Akinteye Afeez, on his social media handle on Thursday.
In a pre-action notice dated April 27, 2026, the students’ solicitors, Al-Inqaaz Legal Consults, said they were acting on behalf of final-year students who benefited from the NELFUND student loan scheme during the 2024/2025 academic session.
According to the lawyers, NELFUND disbursed funds directly to the university to cover the students’ registration fees after some of the beneficiaries had already paid the fees from their own pockets.
The lawyers argued that because the university subsequently received payment from NELFUND for the same registration fees, the affected students became entitled to refunds.
They further alleged that although the university acknowledged the need to refund the students, the payments were yet to be made.
The applicants are asking the court to grant an order of mandamus compelling the university and its officials to refund the registration fees allegedly owed to the affected students.
The pre-action notice and court filings were posted on Thursday by the President of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) on his social media handle.
The university had yet to respond publicly to the suit as of the time of filing this report.
