Former Barcelona manager Xavi Hernández has revealed he is open to taking charge of a national team, saying he would welcome the opportunity to coach at major international tournaments, including the FIFA World Cup, UEFA European Championship, Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and AFC Asian Cup.
The 46-year-old has been without a coaching role since leaving Barcelona in May 2024 after a trophyless campaign and believes international management would provide a better balance between football and family life.
Xavi eyes national team role
Speaking to Spanish broadcaster RNE, as quoted by beIN Sports, the former Spain midfielder said leading a national team is an option he is seriously considering.
“My next step could be a national team. I’ll say it openly – this could be a good fit,” Xavi said.
“A club wouldn’t allow me as much time with my family. I’ve got young children. I’m keen to take part as a coach in a World Cup, the Euros, AFCON or the Asian Cup.”
Xavi has not returned to management since his departure from Barcelona but has repeatedly been linked with several club vacancies across Europe and the Middle East.
Successful playing and coaching career
As Barcelona manager, Xavi led the club to the 2022-23 La Liga title and the Spanish Super Cup. He managed 143 matches, winning 90 for a success rate of 62.9 percent.
Before returning to the Camp Nou, he enjoyed a successful spell with Qatari side Al Sadd, winning seven trophies.
Widely regarded as one of football’s greatest midfielders, Xavi made 767 competitive appearances for Barcelona, second only to Lionel Messi in the club’s all-time appearance list.
He also enjoyed a distinguished international career with Spain, earning 133 caps and helping his country win the 2010 FIFA World Cup as well as the UEFA European Championship titles in 2008 and 2012.
Xavi retired from international football after Spain’s elimination from the 2014 World Cup and now appears ready to begin the next phase of his coaching career on the international stage.
