England survived a major World Cup scare after captain Harry Kane scored twice late in the match to seal a dramatic 2-1 victory over DR Congo and book a place in the last 16.
Thomas Tuchel’s side looked set for a shock elimination in Atlanta after falling behind early and struggling to break down a determined Congolese defence for much of the contest.
However, Kane delivered when England needed him most, scoring in the 75th and 86th minutes to complete a remarkable comeback and keep their World Cup hopes alive.
The victory sends England into the next round, where they will face co-hosts Mexico in Mexico City.
DR Congo threaten famous upset
DR Congo made the brighter start and stunned England when Brian Cipenga found the net to hand the African side an early lead.
England dominated possession but struggled to create clear opportunities against an organised defence inspired by goalkeeper Lional Mpasi, who produced several important saves to frustrate the Three Lions.
DR Congo also came close to extending their advantage before half-time. Yoane Wissa struck the post with the goal at his mercy, a miss that ultimately proved costly.
England’s attack lacked sharpness for long periods, leaving Tuchel’s men on the brink of one of the country’s biggest World Cup disappointments.
Kane delivers under pressure
With just 15 minutes remaining, England finally found a breakthrough. Substitute Anthony Gordon delivered an inviting cross into the penalty area, where Kane rose highest to head home the equaliser.
The Bayern Munich striker then completed the turnaround four minutes from time with a moment of individual brilliance.
Receiving the ball on the edge of the penalty area, Kane turned quickly before driving a powerful right-footed shot beyond Mpasi to score his fifth goal of the tournament.
The Three Lions now move into the last 16 with renewed confidence, although Tuchel will expect a much-improved display when his side face Mexico in the next round.
For DR Congo, the defeat brought an end to a memorable World Cup campaign after pushing one of the tournament favourites to the brink of elimination.
