Manchester United’s proposed signing of Atalanta midfielder Ederson has been thrown into doubt, with uncertainty growing over whether the transfer will be completed.
United agreed a £35 million deal for the Brazil international on June 2 and initially planned for him to undergo a medical at the beginning of July before the squad returned for pre-season.
Delay raises fresh questions
Those plans changed after Ederson received a late call-up to Carlo Ancelotti’s Brazil squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The expectation was that the 27-year-old would complete his medical once Brazil’s campaign ended. However, despite Brazil’s elimination by Norway, there has been no progress on the transfer.
Reports have suggested the move is in jeopardy after medical tests allegedly revealed an issue, with one source claiming the deal has collapsed.
However, sources at both Manchester United and Atalanta have denied that the transfer has been cancelled, insisting no final decision has been made. Ederson is understood to remain in the United States following Brazil’s World Cup exit.
United face difficult transfer window
Any collapse of the deal would represent another setback in a challenging summer for Manchester United as they seek to strengthen their squad ahead of their return to the UEFA Champions League.
The club’s pursuit of Nottingham Forest midfielder Elliot Anderson ended after his valuation rose to £116 million, while efforts to sign West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes were unsuccessful after Tottenham secured the Portugal international in an £85 million deal.
United have since agreed moves for Chelsea midfielder Andrey Santos and former Leeds United goalkeeper Karl Darlow, but the uncertainty surrounding Ederson continues to leave a gap in the club’s midfield plans.
Supporters are now waiting for clarity on whether the Brazilian will complete his move to Old Trafford or become the latest transfer target to slip away during the summer window.
