A U.S.-based organisation, Quantus Medical Foundation, has deployed four Patient Liaison Officers (PLOs) to Aba General Hospital, Aba, as part of its efforts to improve patient care and hospital operations in Abia.
The PLO Manager, Mr Uzoma Onyeka, announced the intervention at a brief ceremony in Aba, on Monday, saying the gesture was meant to boost the Abia Healthcare Rebirth Initiative (AHCRI) outcomes.
He said that AHCRI was pioneered by Gov. Alex Otti to transform the healthcare culture in the state.
Onyeka said that the deployment followed similar rollouts at the Abia State Specialist Hospital, Umuahia, and the Abia State University Teaching Hospital, Aba.
He described the foundation as a Nigeria-focused healthcare transformation organisation, founded by Dr Nnenna Ihekoromadu, and working in partnership with the Abia Ministry of Health.
According to him, the foundation’s “CARE” matrix – Compassion, Accountability, Respect, and Excellence – guides the work of the PLOs.
“This phase will focus on supporting the Accident and Emergency Unit and other critical service areas of the hospital.
“The partnership is already improving patient experience.
“Patients are happy with us for the intervention, and with the governor, the Commissioner for health, Prof. Enoch Uche, and the Ministry of Health,” Onyeka said.
Also speaking, the PLO Team Lead, Mr Bernard Egbe, said the officers were employed by the foundation to serve as a bridge between patients and healthcare providers.
He said that their duty was to listen to patients, guide them, explain procedures, and support service areas, including medical records, Accident and Emergency, and radiology.
Egbe said: “They help resolve minor issues, identify bottlenecks, and escalate critical matters to management.
“Since the emergence of PLOs, there have been testimonies of issues being resolved easily and amicably.
“We have noticed a significant culture shift and things have been going on very well.”
The Medical Director of Aba General Hospital, Dr Amaka Kamanu, commended the foundation for the intervention, describing it as “a major boost to healthcare delivery in the state”.
Kamanu also highlighted key improvements at the hospital in the last three years under the Otti administration.
She identified some of the areas to include the clearance of salary arrears, regular payment of salaries, salary increments, and upgrade of laboratory equipment.
“We now have automated equipment, so our results are prompt, quick, reliable, and accurate.
“Power supply to the hospital has greatly improved.
“We have also conducted several medical outreaches and, in February this year, launched a Sexual Assault Referral Centre,” Kamanu said.
She lauded the effective implementation of the Abia Health Insurance Scheme and ongoing monthly cervical cancer screening held every second Saturday.
Kamanu appreciated the governor and the commissioner for health for what she called “remarkable and result-oriented leadership”.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that AHCRI currently operates across health facilities in the state, while a similar initiative, the “We Care Nigeria Initiative,” is running at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, Enugu.
