Toke Makinwa Reveals the Painful Lesson That Ended Her Gift-Giving Habit

Media personality and actress Toke Makinwa has revealed the personal experience that led her to stop buying gifts for men she is romantically involved with.

The broadcaster made the disclosure during a recent episode of her Toke Moments podcast, which featured reality TV star Beauty Tukura as a guest.

According to Makinwa, the decision was shaped by a painful relationship she experienced while she was an undergraduate.

She recalled dating a man who was about 10 years older than her and said she went to great lengths to celebrate his birthday, including using money meant for her university school fees.

Makinwa said she organised a birthday outing for him at an Italian restaurant in Victoria Island, where he reportedly ordered several meals during the celebration.

However, she said the experience took an unexpected turn after they returned to his residence.

According to the media personality, she discovered another woman at the man’s home, leaving her heartbroken and deeply disappointed.

Reflecting on the incident, Makinwa said the betrayal had a lasting emotional impact and ultimately changed her approach to relationships.

She explained that the experience was the reason she no longer spends money on gifts for men she dates.

The revelation has since generated conversations on social media, with many users sharing differing opinions on gift-giving, relationships and emotional boundaries.
