Toke Makinwa Explains Why Women Should Avoid Marrying in Their 20s

Media personality and actress Toke Makinwa has shared her views on marriage, arguing that women should not feel pressured to get married in their 20s because many are still discovering themselves during that stage of life.

She made the remarks during a recent episode of her podcast, Toke Moments, which featured reality television star Tacha as a guest.

Speaking on the programme, Makinwa said women often experience significant personal growth in their 20s and may not yet have the self-awareness needed to make major life decisions, including marriage.

According to her, many women who married at a young age later realised they had rushed into the decision.

“Women have no business getting married in their 20s. You don’t even know yourself yet. Those who did are regretting it now. Even those who are still married, if they are being honest, they will tell you that they shouldn’t have rushed it,” she said.

Reacting to the discussion, Tacha shared advice she once received from her mother, describing marriage as an institution that often leaves people on both sides longing for the opposite experience.

“My mum says marriage is like an institution. Those inside want to get out, while those outside can’t wait to get in,” Tacha said.

The comments have since generated conversations on social media, with many users debating whether there is an ideal age for marriage or whether personal readiness should take priority over societal expectations.

The discussion also adds to ongoing public conversations about relationships, career growth and changing attitudes toward marriage among young Nigerians.
