President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated the United Kingdom’s new Prime Minister, Rt. Hon. Andy Burnham, on his assumption of office, expressing optimism that Nigeria and the UK would deepen bilateral relations under the new administration.
The President said he looks forward to working closely with the new British leader to expand cooperation in key areas of mutual interest and further strengthen the longstanding strategic partnership between both countries.
The position was contained in a statement issued on Tuesday by the spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa.
President Tinubu also congratulated the government and people of the United Kingdom on what he described as a peaceful, orderly and seamless transition of leadership.
The President said the smooth transfer of power once again demonstrated the strength of the UK’s democratic institutions and constitutional tradition.
Tinubu recalled his productive engagement with the immediate past British Prime Minister during his official visit to the United Kingdom in March 2026, expressing confidence that Prime Minister Burnham would build on the gains recorded during the visit.
He said he looked forward to exploring new opportunities for partnership, collaboration and cooperation with the United Kingdom under Burnham’s leadership.
The President also expressed his desire to engage the new Prime Minister at the earliest opportunity, both bilaterally and within the framework of the Commonwealth, to deepen bilateral relations and strengthen the strategic partnership between Nigeria and the United Kingdom for the mutual benefit of both countries.
Tinubu wished Prime Minister Burnham a successful tenure in office and reaffirmed Nigeria’s readiness to work closely with the new British administration in advancing shared priorities and addressing common global challenges.
