A 13-year-old boy has died and several others were injured after a fountain collapsed during celebrations of Spain’s World Cup victory in Ciudad Rodrigo, western Spain.
The incident occurred shortly after midnight on Monday in Ciudad Rodrigo, a medieval city of approximately 12,000 residents in Salamanca province, close to the Portuguese border.
Hundreds had gathered at the Arbol Gordo fountain in the city centre when its upper section broke away, striking several individuals, according to regional emergency services.
Confirming the incident on Monday, the Ciudad Rodrigo City Council expressed grief over the tragedy.
“The City Hall of Ciudad Rodrigo expresses its sadness and extends its condolences over the death of a 13-year-old boy,” the statement read.
Officials described the incident as a heartbreaking turn of events, saying what was meant to be a night of celebration had ended in tragedy for the community.
“What should have been a celebration of Spain’s team winning the Football World Cup turned into tragedy,” the municipality added.
