A devastating rainstorm has destroyed houses and damaged power lines in several Jigawa communities while leaving residents counting losses.
Beyond the destruction of homes, the storm also uprooted numerous trees, damaged electricity infrastructure, and disrupted normal activities in affected neighbourhoods.
The strong winds accompanying the rainfall reportedly caused extensive damage to private and public property, many buildings were said to have lost their roofs, while fences and shops were also affected by the violent weather.
The destruction was recorded in communities including Gida Dubu, Takur Site, Mobile, Kudi, Dan Masara, Kwaimawa and other parts of Dutse metropolis in Jigawa during Saturday to Sunday evening rainfall.
A resident, Safiya Bello, told The Guild via a phone conversation on Monday how the rainstorm wreaked havoc on communities.
“The wind was extremely strong and tore off roofs within minutes. Many families have been left struggling to protect their belongings from further damage,” Safiya said.
Moreover, the heavy rainfall reportedly blocked several drainage channels and culverts, creating fears of flooding as water flow was restricted in many locations.
Safiya linked the blockage to the accumulation of refuse and plastic waste dumped in waterways.
According to her, the failure to regularly clear drainage systems before the peak of the rainy season contributed to the situation.
She warned that more serious flooding could occur if urgent steps are not taken to address the problem.
“We are worried that if another heavy rainfall occurs, many areas could experience severe flooding because the drainage channels are already blocked,” Safiya added.
Ending her conversation on the disaster, Safiya appealed to the state government and relevant agencies for immediate support.
She urges authorities to assist victims and implement preventive measures to reduce the risk of future disasters during the rainy season.
