TimesNG Fact-Check Debunks Viral Claim Linking AIG Moshood Jimoh to Mohbad Investigation
TimesNG has debunked a viral social media claim alleging that Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) Moshood Jimoh obstructed or mishandled the investigation into the controversial death of Nigerian singer Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad.
The fact-checking organisation described the allegation as false, citing official records that show Jimoh was not in charge of the Lagos State Police Command when the singer died or during the investigation.
The claim, which circulated widely on Facebook and other social media platforms, accused Jimoh of compromising the probe into Mohbad’s death, which occurred on September 12, 2023.
However, TimesNG‘s review of the timeline of events established that the Lagos State Police Command launched the investigation shortly after Mohbad’s death under the leadership of then Commissioner of Police Idowu Owohunwa. Throughout 2023 and 2024, the investigation involved arrests, interrogations, forensic examinations and court proceedings before the case was transferred to the Force Criminal Investigation Department (Force CID) in Abuja.
According to official records from the Nigeria Police Force and the Police Service Commission, Moshood Jimoh was appointed Commissioner of Police for Lagos State on February 17, 2025—more than 17 months after Mohbad’s death and long after the major phases of the investigation had been completed.
Before his appointment to Lagos, Jimoh served in other policing roles, including Commissioner of Police for the Eastern Ports, with no operational responsibility for Lagos during the period under review.
Responding to the allegation, AIG Jimoh denied any involvement in the case.
«”I was not the Commissioner of Police in Lagos when Mohbad died in 2023 and when the case was investigated throughout 2024. I became Commissioner of Police on 18 February 2025. I don’t know anything about the Mohbad case. The case, I learnt, ended with the Force CID, Abuja. I have no hand in all these allegations,” he said.»
TimesNG noted that Jimoh’s explanation aligns with publicly available records on his appointment and the chronology of the investigation.
The organisation also observed that social commentator Segun Awosanya, popularly known as Segalink, had publicly challenged the viral claim, arguing that it ignored the documented timeline of Jimoh’s appointment and the progression of the investigation.
After reviewing official records, court proceedings and police statements, TimesNG said it found no credible evidence linking Jimoh to the handling, supervision or alleged compromise of the investigation into Mohbad’s death.
The organisation concluded that the allegation was based on misinformation that disregarded the established timeline of events and wrongly attributed responsibility to an officer who was not serving in the Lagos Command when the case was investigated.
TimesNG therefore declared the claim false, affirming that there is no factual basis for allegations that AIG Moshood Jimoh obstructed or “messed up” the investigation into Mohbad’s death.
