Portugal has appointed indigenous tactician, Jorge Jesus, as head coach after their elimination from the 2026 World Cup as successor for Roberto Martinez who left the role after their involvement in the global football competition.
The Selecao informed that Jesus penned a four-year deal to coach the side in the deal which is expected to run till 2030 with the country expected to be a co-hosting country of the tournament.
The tactician, who was announced to the position on Friday, is taking over a national team for the first time. Most recently, Jorge Jesus led Cristiano Ronaldo’s club, Al-Nassr, to the Saudi Arabian league title. He has also won numerous other national titles.
He is one of the most successful Portuguese coaches of the past few decades. Among other achievements, he won three league titles with Benfica Lisbon in 2010, 2014, and 2015. With Flamengo Rio de Janeiro, he won the Brazilian championship in 2019 as well as the Copa Libertadores, the South American equivalent of the European Champions League.
