Controversial Nigerian singer Habeeb Okikiola Badmus, popularly known as Portable, has claimed that wealth and fame are affecting the creativity of some of the country’s biggest music stars.
In a video shared online, the “Zazu” crooner argued that successful artists have become disconnected from the realities of everyday Nigerians, a shift he believes is reflected in the themes of their songs.
Singer calls for more conscious music
Portable specifically mentioned Afrobeats stars Wizkid, Davido, Burna Boy and Olamide, alleging that their recent music focuses more on women and luxurious lifestyles than on messages that inspire listeners.
According to him, music should educate, motivate and address real-life issues rather than concentrate solely on entertainment.
He also encouraged fellow musicians to include more gospel and socially conscious themes in their work.
‘Money isn’t everything’
The singer urged his colleagues to rethink the direction of their music, insisting that financial success should not be the only focus.
Portable argued that artists have a responsibility to create songs that positively influence society and inspire their audience.
He maintained that Nigerian music would benefit from more meaningful lyrics and messages that connect with the experiences of ordinary people.
