The Zamfara state Police Command Tuesday said it has rescued 11 people abducted by armed bandits following an attack on Gummi–Sokoto Road.
The command’s Public Relations Officer (PRO), DSP Yazid Abubakar, said the incident occurred at about 10:30 a.m. Tuesday morning when a large group of gunmen ambushed a trailer conveying vegetables and passengers along the highway.
The police said the bandits opened fire on the vehicle, forcing the driver to lose control and veer off the road. He added that one passenger was killed in the attack.
“The victim was identified as Dan Fati Umar, male, of Gidan Ganja via Bukuyum. Another passenger sustained serious injuries and he is currently receiving medical treatment,” he said.
DSP Yazid stated further that an unspecified number of passengers were abducted during the assault.
Following what the command described as a swift response by police operatives and other security personnel, 11 of the kidnapped victims were rescued.
He added that the rescued persons have since been reunited with their families.
“The trailer involved in the attack remains under police protection, while efforts are ongoing to rescue the remaining abducted victims and apprehend the perpetrators of the attack,” the statement reads.
