The Police Service Commission (PSC) has dismissed four senior police officers and sanctioned 31 others in a sweeping disciplinary action aimed at strengthening accountability and professionalism within the Nigeria Police Force.
The Commission said the affected officers were found culpable of various offences, including gross misconduct, unprofessional conduct and acts unbecoming of public officers, stressing that the disciplinary measures reflect its commitment to enforcing high ethical standards within the police.
The sanctions were approved during the Commission’s plenary meeting held at its Corporate Headquarters in Abuja and were announced in a statement issued on Tuesday by the Head of Protocol and Public Relations, Ikechukwu Ani.
According to the PSC, 10 senior officers were demoted as part of the disciplinary measures. Three Superintendents of Police were reduced to the rank of Deputy Superintendent of Police, two Deputy Superintendents of Police were demoted to Assistant Superintendent of Police, while five Assistant Superintendents of Police were reduced to the rank of Inspector.
The Commission also approved the compulsory retirement of two officers in the public interest.
Other sanctions included severe reprimands for 10 officers, reprimands for five officers, warning letters for three officers and a letter of advice for one officer.
It also exonerated seven officers after finding no evidence of wrongdoing against them.
Chairman of the PSC, DIG Hashimu Argungu, said the Commission would maintain a zero-tolerance stance against indiscipline within the Nigeria Police Force.
“The current Board of the PSC under my watch will not condone any form of misconduct by police officers,” he said.
Argungu added that the Commission would continue to ensure that acts of misconduct attract appropriate disciplinary measures while officers who demonstrate diligence, integrity and professionalism are duly recognised and rewarded.
The PSC reaffirmed its commitment to promoting accountability, professionalism and public confidence in the Nigeria Police Force through the consistent enforcement of disciplinary standards.
