The Police have arrested a 20-year-old woman, Rabi Abubakar, over an alleged offence of assaulting her pregnant co-wife with hot water in an attack that reportedly claimed a newborn’s life in Bauchi State.
The Police command held that the alleged assault by Abubakar, already in custody, was reported after which it’s operatives immediately visited the scene. The suspect was subsequently traced and arrested, and during preliminary interrogation, she voluntarily confessed to the commission of the offence.
Confirming the development on Friday, the Bauchi State Police Command’s spokesperson, SP Nafiu Habib, said the incident occurred on July 17, 2026, at about 7:30 a.m. in Daba Village, Bauchi Local Government Area, adding that the matter was formally reported to the police on July 22 by the Officer-in-Charge of the Dabe Police Outstation in the Soro Division.
According to the security agency, the accused poured boiling water on her 30-year-old pregnant co-wife during a dispute, leaving the victim with life-threatening burns.
The victim was immediately taken to a hospital for urgent medical care after sustaining severe injuries, and while undergoing treatment, she delivered a baby boy, but the infant, who had also suffered critical burn injuries, later died.
Police confirmed that the mother survived the attack and is responding positively to treatment, also disclosing that the suspect remains in police custody, adding that the case would be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for a comprehensive investigation and possible prosecution.
Reacting to the incident, the Commissioner of Police in Bauchi State, Sani-Omolori Aliyu, condemned the alleged assault and assured residents that the command would pursue the matter to its logical conclusion.
“The Command will ensure a diligent investigation and prosecution of the matter in accordance with the law,” the commissioner said.
Aliyu also urged members of the public to resolve family disputes through peaceful means and encouraged residents to promptly report incidents of domestic violence to law enforcement agencies for timely intervention.
