THE Poultry Association of Nigeria (PAN), Lagos State Chapter, says it will partner with academics to train poultry farmers on modern production techniques aimed at improving productivity and profitability in the sector.
The state Chairman of PAN, Mr Mojeed Iyiola, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Lagos.
He said the association would hold its annual conference later in July with the theme: “Transforming Nigeria’s Poultry Industry Through Innovations and Investments.”
According to him, researchers from Nigerian tertiary institutions and practising veterinarians will equip farmers with modern poultry production techniques, technologies and management practices.
“Our yearly conference is targeted at educating, training and retraining poultry farmers on modern poultry production.
“We want to bridge the gap between the town and the gown by bringing practising farmers and research experts together to transform the poultry industry.
“We expect more than 500 poultry farmers to participate so they can adopt improved production systems for better output,” he said.
Iyiola said inadequate knowledge of poultry management remained one of the major factors limiting productivity and contributing to the failure of many poultry enterprises.
According to him, many farmers lack basic knowledge of biosecurity, feed formulation, feeding systems and the construction of standard poultry houses.
“Understanding poultry management is critical to successful poultry production. There are established standards for setting up poultry houses, but many farmers are unaware of them.
“This conference is designed to close those knowledge gaps and equip farmers with the skills needed to improve productivity and profitability,” he said. (NAN)
