Only about 12% of Pakistanis had a favourable view of the US, while roughly 74% viewed it unfavourably, according to an earlier Pew Research Center study, even as successive governments in the country often acted in Washington’s favour for a variety of reasons, writes former Diplomat Amb. Pakistan is a country owned and controlled by its military and not the other way round as is the international norm. Hence Rawalpindi prevails over Islamabad. When sometimes Army Generals are not in power, in an apparent democratic set up, they hold the levers of power, from economy to state institutions driving the fate of the people. Politicians and Prime Ministers often serve and survive at the mercy and support of the Army and ISI chief and now they have a Field Marshal to reckon with.
