Over 100 cancer scientists and researchers are expected to converge on Abuja to identify practical solutions to expand equitable access to high-quality cancer care across Africa.
The meeting, organised by the African Organisation for Research and Training in Cancer (AORTIC), would be hosted by the Best of ASCO Africa (BOAA), 2026 in Abuja.
Other experts expected to attend the Best of ASCO Africa (BOAA) 2026 are; leaders, policymakers, patient advocates, patients, industry partners, and healthcare professionals from across Africa and around the world.
The Managing Director of AORTIC, Belmira Rodrigues, in a statement issued on Friday, explained that the meeting was premier scientific meeting dedicated to translating the latest advances.
Belmira said the meeting, with the theme: “From Global Discovery to Local Delivery: Driving Africa to the Cutting Edge of Cancer Care,” will also translate new cancer medicines, technologies and care, into meaningful improvements for patients across the continent”.
Also, the immediate past president of AORTIC and Co-Chair of the A2I Special Interest Group, Dr Miriam Mutebi, said scientific discovery alone does not change lives.
She said inovation changes lives only when it reaches cancer patients.
According to her, the best of ASCO Africa provides a platform to translate global evidence into African action by strengthening partnerships, sharing implementation experiences.
She said the two-day conference would showcase practice-changing science presented at the 2026 ASCO Annual Meeting, alongside African-led context.
She said there would be implementation experiences, bringing together stakeholders from across the cancer ecosystem to identify practical solutions to expand equitable access to high-quality cancer care across Africa.
Also, the North America Vice President of AORTIC and Co-Chair of the A2I Special Interest Group, Dr Abiola Ibraheem, said, the future of cancer care in Africa would be built through collaboration.
“By bringing together clinicians, researchers, policymakers, regulators, industry and patient advocates, BOAA 2026 creates an opportunity to move beyond identifying barriers and toward implementing sustainable solutions that improve access to innovation for every patient,” Ibraheem said.
AORTIC was the only pan-African non-governmental organisation dedicated to cancer prevention, control, palliative care, and survivorship since 1988.
