The Ondo state Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, has issued a final and stern warning to proprietors of private primary and secondary schools across the state against organising unauthorised graduation and promotion ceremonies for non-terminal classes.
The Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Professor Igbekele Ajibefun, stated that the ministry is concerned with the persistent violation of the state government’s directive banning such ceremonies.
Reiterating the government’s position, Ajibefun stated that graduation ceremonies for non-terminal classes serve no academic purpose and impose unnecessary financial burdens on parents and guardians.
“Furthermore, these activities disrupt the academic calendar and divert schools from their primary mandate of providing quality teaching and learning,” the commissioner said.
The ministry directed all private schools to immediately suspend any ongoing plans or advertisements for graduation ceremonies involving pupils and students in non-terminal classes.
It maintained that only formal graduation or promotion ceremonies for learners completing the final year of primary or secondary education are permissible, and such events must be conducted with moderation.
Ajibefun urged school proprietors to channel their resources and attention towards curriculum delivery and the welfare of students rather than ceremonial activities that add no educational value.
“The Ministry maintains a zero-tolerance policy on non-compliance. The state government is prepared to impose severe sanctions on any institution found violating this directive,” he warned.
