NYSC to sanction employers who fail to provide accommodation, transport for corps members
The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has announced plans to blacklist employers who fail to provide accommodation and transportation for corps members posted to their organisations.
The Director-General of the scheme, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, made the disclosure during an interactive session with corps members while on a working visit to Kogi State.
According to him, any employer that fails to meet the welfare requirements for corps members would no longer enjoy the services of the NYSC.
“Any employer that fails to provide accommodation and transportation for corps members posted to them will be blacklisted from enjoying the services of the scheme.”
He urged organisations employing corps members to prioritise their welfare, noting that proper support would improve their productivity and overall wellbeing throughout the service year.
The NYSC Director-General also reassured corps members of the Federal Government’s commitment to their security and welfare, while appealing to state governments, local government authorities and other stakeholders to continue supporting the scheme.
He also advised corps members to remain disciplined, dedicated to duty and avoid acts capable of tarnishing the image of the NYSC.
Nafiu further encouraged them to take the Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme seriously, identify business opportunities in their host communities and cultivate a savings culture despite the current economic challenges.
Earlier, the NYSC Coordinator in Kogi State, Mrs Tochi Chika Chris-Moneke, commended the Director-General for the visit, describing it as a demonstration of his commitment to the welfare and security of corps members and staff.
She also revealed that the state secretariat was preparing to organise a corps employers’ workshop and a Health Initiative for Rural Dwellers programme in the coming weeks.
