THE Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, has said that Nnamdi Kanu, its leader, is a global symbol of injustice whose case has gone beyond Nigeria’s domestic affairs.
IPOB made this known in a statement on Friday, July 24, by Emma Powerful, its spokesman, as a response to the motion by Congressman John James on the floor of the United States Congress, advocating for the immediate release of Kanu.
The statement made available to journalist lauded James and members of the US Congress for lending voice of support to Kanu’s case, which has attracted global attention.
IPOB observed that Kanu’s case like that of late South African leader, Nelson Mandela, is one of the few African figures whose issues have attracted the attention of members of the US Congress.
IPOB said that Kanu is no longer a Nigerian internal matter, adding that he has become a global symbol of injustice as many voices are supporting his case calling for his freedom.
According to IPOB, this latest development demonstrated its determination to pursue a referendum on the future of Biafra, adding that the movement had regained unity after years of internal challenges.
IPOB alleged that the trial of Kanu, who was extraordinarily rendited from Kenya, was unfair and called for either a fresh trial based on constitutional provisions or his unconditional release.
It noted that the international community was becoming increasingly aware of the injustices against Kanu, warning that the Nigerian judiciary could face global embarrassment over the matter.
It dismissed reports that Kanu could remain in prison indefinitely, adding that the allegations of terrorism against him by the federal government of Nigeria were losing credibility.
