Canada, playing in front of a passionate crowd, created several early opportunities through Tani Oluwaseyi and Jonathan David, but Moroccan goalkeeper Yassine Bounou produced key saves to keep the match scoreless before the Atlas Lions struck after halftime.
The victory marks Morocco’s second consecutive appearance in the World Cup quarter-finals, making the Atlas Lions the first African nation to reach the last eight in back-to-back tournaments. They will next face the winner of the Round of 16 encounter between France national football team and Paraguay national football team.
For Canada, the defeat brings an end to a memorable campaign that saw the tournament co-hosts progress beyond the group stage and secure their first knockout appearance at a FIFA World Cup.
