THE Edo Government has urged employers of NYSC members in the state to mentor them as future leaders by providing meaningful responsibilities, professional guidance and a conducive work environment.
Mr Charity Amayaenvbo, Commissioner for Youth Affairs, made the call on Tuesday in Benin at the 2026 National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Employers’ Workshop.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the theme of the workshop is “Fine-Tuning Stakeholders’ Collaboration to Enhance Corps Members’ Welfare and Workplace Experience”.
Amayaenvbo said the success of the NYSC scheme depended not only on the management of the scheme but also on the commitment of organisations where corps members were deployed.
“As employers, you are not merely supervisors; you are mentors, trainers and partners in nation-building.
“The quality of supervision, guidance and workplace exposure you provide will significantly influence the professional competence, confidence and career trajectory of every corps member under your care,” he said.
The commissioner urged employers to integrate corps members into organisational activities, assign them meaningful responsibilities, encourage innovation and provide opportunities for professional development.
According to him, stronger collaboration among government institutions, private organisations and educational institutions will create an enabling environment for young graduates to thrive.
“The theme of this workshop is both timely and relevant. Corporate collaboration among stakeholders is essential to improve corps members’ welfare, workplace experience and productivity.”
Earlier, the NYSC state Coordinator, Mr Fasina Adedotun, described corps employers as indispensable partners whose support had sustained the scheme over the past 53 years.
He commended employers in Edo for providing accommodation for corps members across the state’s 18 local government areas.
“I have worked in over 34 states in Nigeria, and the level of accommodation being provided by corps employers in Edo is something I truly admire,” he said.
Adedotun however, urged employers to sustain their support by prioritising corps members’ welfare, effective supervision and mentorship.
“There is a need for stronger collaboration between the NYSC, corps employers and governments at all levels to ensure corps members are not only assigned responsibilities but are also adequately supported and exposed to opportunities that enhance their skills and confidence,” he said.
Also speaking, the NYSC Director-General, Brig.-Gen. Olakunle Nafiu, said employers had a statutory responsibility to provide accommodation or allowance in lieu, transportation support, security and opportunities for professional growth.
Nafiu represented by the Deputy Director, NYSC South-South Area Office I, Asaba, Mr Mayomi Sanmi, stressed that corps members should be protected from discrimination, exploitation, harassment and abuse.
He urged employers to expose corps members to practical learning experiences that would improve their employ-ability after service.
In his opening remarks, the Chairman of Oredo Local Government Council, Mr Gabriel Iduseri, urged employers to see corps members as valuable assets capable of driving innovation and development rather than temporary employees.
Iduseri, who was represented by his Vice, Mr Joseph Odumamwen, reaffirmed the council’s commitment to partnering with the NYSC to improve the welfare and service experience of corps members serving within the local government area.(NAN)
