Manchester United have completed the signing of experienced goalkeeper Karl Darlow on a free transfer following the expiration of his contract with Leeds United.
The Premier League club confirmed on Monday that the Wales international has signed a deal that will keep him at Old Trafford until June 2028, with the option of extending his stay by a further year.
The transfer remains subject to registration.
Darlow strengthens United goalkeeping options
The 35-year-old joins Michael Carrick’s squad to provide experienced competition and cover in the goalkeeping department.
Darlow arrives after making 279 senior appearances during his career, including 74 matches in the Premier League.
He was Leeds United’s first-choice goalkeeper last season, recording five clean sheets as he established himself as a regular starter.
Speaking after completing the move, Darlow described joining Manchester United as “a really special opportunity.”
His arrival comes amid uncertainty surrounding United’s goalkeeping ranks, with André Onana returning to Trabzonspor on loan and Altay Bayındır continuing to be linked with a move away.
Wilcox welcomes experienced addition
United director of football Jason Wilcox praised Darlow’s qualities following the announcement of the signing.
The club believes the former Newcastle United and Nottingham Forest goalkeeper will add valuable experience to the squad while providing competition for first-choice goalkeeper Senne Lammens.
Although Darlow is not expected to challenge immediately for the number one position, he is viewed as a reliable option for domestic cup competitions and an experienced presence within the dressing room.
United secured the goalkeeper without paying a transfer fee after his departure from Leeds, making him a low-cost addition to Carrick’s squad ahead of the 2026/27 season.
