Leeds United have completed the signing of Bosnian international Tarik Muharemović from Italian club Sassuolo in a deal reportedly worth €40 million, making the 23-year-old defender the club’s most expensive signing.
The Premier League newcomers confirmed that Muharemović has signed a five-year contract at Elland Road, reinforcing Daniel Farke’s squad ahead of the 2026/27 season.
The transfer represents a significant statement of ambition by Leeds as they prepare for life back in England’s top flight after securing promotion. The Yorkshire club reportedly fended off competition from several European sides, including Inter Milan, Bournemouth and Sunderland, before completing the deal.
Standing at 6ft 4in, Muharemović has earned a reputation as one of Europe’s emerging central defenders. The left-footed centre-back featured in 33 matches for Sassuolo last season, establishing himself as a key figure in the Italian club’s defence with his aerial dominance, composure on the ball and ability to play out from the back.
The transfer also provides a financial boost for Juventus, Muharemović’s former club. Reports indicate that the Turin giants negotiated a 50 per cent sell-on clause when they sold the defender to Sassuolo in 2025, meaning they are expected to receive around €20 million from the transfer.
Muharemović’s reputation rose further during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where he represented Bosnia and Herzegovina. He played a key role in his country’s campaign after helping them qualify through the playoffs, contributing to Bosnia’s run to the knockout stages of the tournament.
With 17 international appearances to his name, Muharemović becomes the first Bosnian footballer to sign for Leeds United.
His arrival is expected to strengthen a Leeds defence preparing for the challenges of the Premier League. He joins a squad managed by Daniel Farke, who continues to reshape his team during the summer transfer window following the arrival of winger Harry Wilson.

The defender has successfully completed his medical and is expected to join his new teammates immediately for pre-season preparations ahead of Leeds United’s opening Premier League fixture against Nottingham Forest on August 22.
