The Lagos State Government has evacuated residents and business occupants from a distressed four-storey building located at No. 10 Dogara Street, Lagos Island, following the discovery of critical structural defects that pose an imminent risk of collapse.
The evacuation, carried out through the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA), followed a routine inspection and structural assessment that revealed
severe defects capable of endangering lives and neighbouring properties.
According to the Agency on Tuesday, the assessment uncovered significant differential foundation settlement, extensive cracks on major structural members, spalling of reinforced concrete slabs, exposed reinforcement bars in both slabs and columns, and a severely compromised foundation. Officials also observed that several doors could no longer close properly due to the building’s structural movement.
Based on the findings, LASBCA immediately evacuated all occupants from the premises as a precautionary measure to prevent possible loss of lives and property in the event of a collapse.
Speaking on the development, the General Manager of LASBCA, Bldr. Gbaye Florence, said the Agency’s swift intervention had averted a potential disaster, protecting not only the occupants of the distressed building but also residents and businesses in adjoining properties.
She reiterated the Lagos State Government’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property through proactive building control measures, stressing that public safety remains the Agency’s top priority.
The General Manager also urged members of the public to promptly report buildings showing signs of structural distress, including visible cracks, excessive deflection, foundation settlement, or any other indication of structural instability.
According to her, early reporting and timely intervention remain critical to preventing avoidable building collapse incidents across the state.
LASBCA assured residents that it would continue to intensify routine inspections, monitoring, and enforcement activities to ensure strict compliance with building safety regulations and promote a safer built environment across Lagos State.
