As part of efforts to enforce environmental sanitation laws, the Lagos State Government has arrested a woman, Mrs. McCarthy, for allegedly directing her child to dump refuse into a covered drainage channel at No. 56 Adaranijo Street, Pedro, Shomolu.
The government said the arrest underscores its determination to protect public infrastructure and curb practices that contribute to blocked drainage systems and environmental pollution.
The arrest followed a report received on Monday, which prompted the immediate deployment of enforcement officers to the area.
Confirming the development, the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, said investigations revealed that the suspect had instructed her child to dump waste into the drainage channel.
“We expect every resident to act responsibly and to educate their children on the importance of protecting public infrastructure, particularly drainage systems. Encouraging acts that contribute to blocked drains and environmental degradation is unacceptable and will not be tolerated,” Wahab said.
He stressed that maintaining a clean, safe and flood-resilient environment is a shared responsibility, urging residents to dispose of waste through approved channels and support efforts to keep Lagos clean.
Wahab warned that the government would continue to enforce environmental laws across the state, maintaining that individuals found engaging in acts capable of degrading the environment or obstructing drainage channels would face appropriate sanctions.
