The Lagos state government has intensified its campaign against illegal commercial motorcycle operations with the seizure of 309 motorcycles during a major enforcement exercise along the ECOWAS Road corridor in Lagos.
The state government vowed to sustain operations aimed at improving security, traffic management and environmental sanitation across the state.
The operation, carried out by the Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences (Enforcement) Unit, popularly known as the Taskforce, targeted illegal commercial motorcycle operators, street traders, makeshift structures and other environmental infractions that had taken over strategic sections of the busy highway.
The exercise, coordinated by the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources with the support of the Lagos state Police command, forms part of the state government’s broader efforts to strengthen public safety by removing activities believed to provide cover for criminal elements.
Taskforce operatives combed several strategic locations, including Orile-Iganmu, Suuru-Alaba, Mile 2 Underbridge, Maza maza, Festac First Gate, Iyana-Ira, Abule-Ado, Alakija, Iyana-Iba, Alaba Rago, Old Ojo Road and Okoko Bus Stop.
At the end of the operation, 309 commercial motorcycles operating in violation of the state’s transport regulations were impounded. Officers also dismantled illegal kiosks, makeshift shops, shanties and unauthorised plank structures while removing indiscriminately displayed building materials, abandoned household items and domestic animals obstructing public spaces.
