The Kwara State Environmental Protection Agency (KWEPA) has sealed a dilapidated one-storey building in the Oke-Suna area of Ilorin East Local Government Area and ordered its immediate demolition over fears that it could collapse and endanger lives and property.
The agency said the action followed complaints from residents, who reported that the building had become structurally unsafe and posed a serious threat to the surrounding community and passers-by.
In a statement issued on Friday, KWEPA said officials inspected the property after receiving reports about its deteriorating condition and subsequently ordered its demolition to avert a potential disaster.
According to the agency, residents had repeatedly drawn the attention of the property owner to the worsening state of the building, but the owner allegedly failed to take the necessary remedial measures despite several warnings.
Speaking on the development, the General Manager of KWEPA, Jide Aina, described the structure as a serious risk to public safety and directed the owner to commence its immediate demolition.
He warned that should the owner fail to comply, the Kwara State Government would be compelled to demolish the building in the interest of protecting lives and property.
Aina reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to safeguarding residents through proactive environmental enforcement, strict compliance with safety regulations and the timely removal of structures that pose risks to public safety.
He also urged residents to support the government’s efforts by reporting abandoned buildings, distressed structures, environmental nuisances and other potential hazards to KWEPA for prompt intervention.
