A Nigerian Junior Secondary School (JSS3) student, Victor Onwubiko has earned international recognition after qualifying to represent the country at the 2026 International STEM Olympiad in Rome, Italy, where students from more than 150 countries will compete in one of the world’s most prestigious science and mathematics contests.
Victor, widely celebrated for his exceptional mathematical talent, secured his place at the global competition following an outstanding performance at the 2026 South East Mathematics Olympiad. He will represent Nigeria alongside two other students at the International STEM Olympiad Grand Finale.
What has drawn widespread attention to the young scholar is not only his qualification for the global competition but also his remarkable mastery of advanced mathematics at a very early age.
According to educators familiar with his academic journey, Victor has successfully completed K.A. Stroud’s Engineering Mathematics, a textbook widely regarded as a standard reference for engineering undergraduates and professionals studying advanced mathematics. Accomplishing such a feat while still in junior secondary school has been described as extraordinary and has positioned him among Nigeria’s most promising young mathematical talents.
The International STEM Olympiad is designed to bring together gifted students from around the world to compete in mathematics, science, engineering and technology through rigorous problem-solving challenges that emphasize analytical thinking, creativity and innovation rather than rote memorisation.
Victor’s participation comes amid renewed calls by education stakeholders for greater investment in gifted education and science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) programmes across Nigeria.

Education advocate Alex Onyia recently announced that he would sponsor the participation of three Nigerian students and two teachers at the Rome competition, covering travel, accommodation and other related expenses to ensure that financial constraints do not prevent talented students from showcasing their abilities on the global stage.
Education experts say Victor’s achievement demonstrates the immense but often underutilised intellectual potential among Nigerian students. They note that early exposure to advanced mathematical concepts can significantly enhance logical reasoning, critical thinking and future academic performance in fields such as engineering, computer science and technology.
As the competition gets underway in Rome this week, Victor will compete against some of the world’s brightest young STEM talents. Regardless of the outcome, many observers believe his journey from a Nigerian junior secondary classroom to an international academic stage is already a remarkable achievement.
His success has been hailed as a testament to the importance of identifying, nurturing and supporting exceptional young talents, while reinforcing the belief that Nigerian students can excel on the global stage when provided with the right opportunities and encouragement.
